Firefox launches browser-based price tracking

Mozilla has announced that the Firefox Test Pilot team is launching the Price Wise and Email cards in time for the holiday season, offering users more choices and transparency during online purchases.

"These revolutionary desktop tools will make shopping a breeze with more options to save, share, track and buy," the company wrote in a blog post.

Firefox Price Wise allows users to add products to their price list to receive a notification on the desktop every time the price drops, giving them the opportunity to consult the list to purchase an item directly as soon as the price changes. Currently, the feature is only available in the United States and works with the products of five major retailers: Best Buy, eBay, Amazon, Walmart and The Home Depot. Mozilla explained that these particular dealers were among the first 10 visited by Firefox users and that other retailers should be included in the future.

As for e-mail cards, users can select and send links to one or more tabs opened in Firefox, making it easy to share links with friends and family. The feature also allows users to copy multiple tabs to the clipboard for external sharing. For now, the feature works only with Gmail, even if other clients are expected to be added in the near future.

Mozilla also announced that many of his previous pilot experiments are ready for an official launch. Send, which allows users to upload and encrypt large files to be shared online, will be updated and released by the end of the year. In addition, Firefox Color, which offers users the ability to customize different elements of a browser including background texture, text, icons, toolbar and lights and side view and allows two different browser tabs to be displayed in the same tab inside the same browser window, it will be started as a standalone extension.
