Eleven cases of COVID-19 in the York region have been traced to a group of soccer players at a sports complex in Vaughan.
The region’s public health unit says a group of 20-25 people played soccer at the TRIO Sportsplex and Event Center on Cityview Boulevard on November 11 and again on November 15.
The York region entered the “red control” zone – which prohibits playing or playing team sports – on November 16.
“While the group wore masks during the game, the masks were not worn in the locker room,” read a public health notice released Saturday by the York Region.
The first case of COVID-19 was confirmed on November 27, and another 10 cases have since been traced to this group of players. Eight infected people come from Toronto while there is only one case each in the Peel and Simcoe-Muskoka region.
York region health officials say the risk of exposure for those who attended the events is high and recommend that people self-isolate and monitor themselves for symptoms until November 30.
If someone develops symptoms, they are asked to go to an assessment center and undergo tests and self-isolate pending those results.
