The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) is ready to test a simple blood test that can detect more than 50 types of cancer.
The Galleri blood test was developed by the Californian health company Grail.
NHS England hopes that the blood test will be particularly useful in identifying types of cancer that are currently difficult to diagnose and treat early.
According to the press release, the pilot program, which will start in mid-2021, will involve 165,000 people, including 140,000 between the ages of 50 and 79 who are symptom-free but will have annual blood tests over a three-year period.
The remaining 25,000 participants will be people with possible symptoms of cancer who will be offered blood tests to speed up their diagnosis after being referred to the hospital in the normal way.
Results are expected by 2023, after which it is hoped that one million people will be able to receive the test by 2025.
