After subtracting the light from the stars and the oddities of the camera, the researchers were left with the light that came from beyond the galaxy.
The next step was to remove all light attributable to all known galaxies, but once this was achieved, there was still a lot of unexplained light.
Dr Marc Postman, an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute, said: “[Maybe there is] some other source of light that we don’t yet know what it is. “
Dr Michael Zemcov, an astrophysicist at the Rochester Institute of Technology, not involved in the research, added: ‘They say there is as much light outside the galaxies as there is inside, which is a pretty hard pill to swallow, frankly.
