In his opening address of DevCon 4 in Prague, the creator of Ethereum Vitalik Buterin follows the history of ideas – some integrated and others abandoned – that have led to where the platform is today and looks forward to Ethereum 2.0.
"Ethereum 2.0 is this combination of a series of different characteristics that we have been talking about for several years, which they have been researching for several years, actively building for several years, which will eventually come together in a single coherent whole. of-stake, Casper, scalability, sharding, virtual machine enhancements (EWASM), cross-channel contract logic improvements and actually the list goes on …
"[Serenity is] a realization of all these different strands of research on which we have spent all of our time over the past four years. So this includes Casper, and not just Casper hybrid, 100% organic, genuine, pure Casper. Sharding, EWASM and all these other research ideas on protocols. This is a new blockchain, in the sense of being a data structure, but it has this kind of link to the existing work testing chain. The stake test chain would be aware of the blocking hash of the job test blockchain. You would be able to move the ether from the proof-of-work chain to the proof-of-stake chain. "
"So it's a new system, but it's a connected system, and the kind of long-term goal is that once this new system is stable enough, practically all applications on the existing blockchain can be folded into a contract on a fragment of the new system that would be an EVM interpreter written in EWASM. "
According to Buterin, Serenity will offer a huge increase in scalability and will make the 15 transactions per second of Ethereum a thing of the past.
"Serenity is also the world's computer as it really is meant to be, not a 1999 smart phone capable of processing 15 transactions per second and possibly potentially snaking, and it is still decentralized and we hope that in many metrics it will be even more decentralized of today. "
Buterin did not give an exact window for the launch of Serenity, but says that after years of work, a functioning product is on the horizon.
"The launch is fundamentally the milestone that we have all been waiting for, all of whom we have been waiting for, to which we have worked over the last 4-5 years and a milestone that is no longer that far".
