Dr Alice Hughes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences said there has been a lack of accurate data tracking of the world’s bee species so far.

He said: ‘Here we combine millions of records to create the first maps of global bee wealth and understand why we see these patterns.

“These maps and our structure can then form the basis for future work, enabling us to better understand bee wealth patterns and ensure they are effectively preserved in the future.”

Although the populations of some species such as bumblebees in Europe and North America are well studied, documentation has been notably scarcer in Asia and Africa.
