Faulty wiring by a technician who helped build a European space rocket appears to have caused it to fail in flight with the loss of Spanish and French satellites costing more than 300 million euros.

The Vega launcher deviated from its intended course eight minutes after taking off from the European spaceport in French Guiana early yesterday following the ignition of the engine in its upper module.

It marks the second failure in the last three launches involving the smallest of the European Space Agency’s Ariane rocket family.
