GitHub restores YouTube-DL after EFF surgery

GitHub renews YouTube-DL after EFF intervention and changes the review process in DMCA.

Last month, GitHub downloaded several repositories containing YouTube-DL code following a DMCA notification to the Recording Industry Association of America, Inc. (RIAA). GitHub announced today that the YouTube-DL repositories have been restored.

GitHub revealed that the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) (International No-Profit Digital Rights Group) was involved immediately after the introduction of the proliferation block. With their help, YouTube-DL was shown not to violate the DMCA based on new information that showed that the project was not explicitly aimed at circumventing the technical protection measure (TPM). Therefore, YouTube-DL’s repositories never contained infringing code, so no policies were violated.

GitHub CEO Nat Friedman said resuming YouTube-DL technology on his platform is a big win for developers.
