Representatives of 12 national institutions examine the problems of education in the Arab world and the vision of 2050

The National Human Rights Council participated in a remote consultative meeting on the future of education in the Arab region through the application of “Zoom”.

The meeting was organized by the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions, in the presence of Sultan bin Hassan Al-Jamali, Executive Director of the Network, in collaboration with the Arab Institute for Human Rights, in the presence of Dr. Abdul Basit Hassan, President of the Institute.

The meeting was attended by representatives of 12 national human rights institutions from Egypt, Sudan, Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Sultanate of Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Morocco and Algeria, where the participants examined the reality and education problems in their countries and made recommendations for the future of education in 2050.

The council was represented by May Naguib, in charge of cooperation with the network, and May Hamdy, head of the Committee on Cultural Rights, who gave a speech on the reality of education in Egypt in terms of problems and opportunities, and explained the efforts of the Council in the field of revision of human rights-based school curricula.

His speech included a number of recommendations, in particular: assessing the experience of distance education and how it can be used, developing curricula and relying on research, creativity and activity instead of memorization and indoctrination, development of related skills to information technology and instillation of self-learning skills, as well as activating the positive education model in schools to build student personality on responsibility and respect and use of a human rights-based approach to education.

The meeting is part of UNESCO’s global initiative to establish a high-level international body to prepare a vision for the future of education by 2050, as the authority will publish a report containing its recommendations in November 2021, after conducting global discussions with various parties and stakeholders, as well as the possibility of receiving individual contributions through the UNESCO site by probing, writing an article or sending an artistic or literary work to children and adults.
