On Monday evening, Apple sent out invitations to the press to an online event called “One More Thing” to be held on November 10th. According to Bloomberg, this event will feature the first MacBook laptops featuring Apple-designed faces. This is a significant change in the way Intel has equipped Apple laptops since 2006.
Sources cited by Bloomberg say Apple and its suppliers have increased production of three MacBook laptops equipped with Apple processors: the new MacBook Pro with a 13-inch and 16-inch screen diagonal and a new MacBook Air with a 13-inch screen diagonal. Sources add that subcontractor Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., is the one assembling the two smaller laptops while Quanta Computer Inc. manufactures the 16-inch screen diagonal MacBook Pro.
Since Apple controls less than 10% of the personal computer market, the decision to use its own processors will not have a significant impact on Intel’s sales. But Apple’s decision highlights a crisis facing Intel, the world’s largest chip maker, which has been slow to adopt new manufacturing processes, giving rivals a chance to catch up.
The partnership between Apple and Intel began in 2005 when Steve Jobs wanted to make the transition from PowerPC processors. Intel helped Apple catch up with Windows computers, which were more powerful at the time. In parallel, however, Apple has begun working on low-power chips for its mobile devices based on architectures designed by Arm Ltd. and uses these chips for iPhones and iPads.
According to Bloomberg, Apple’s first Mac processors will be based on the A14 chip found in the latest iPhone phones. The new laptops will also have Apple-designed graphics processors. But beyond the change of processors, the new MacBook laptops will not undergo major design changes.
