[Test pratico]PS5 internal and external SSD strategy three major restrictions + Sony’s official response

[ad_1]

Many PS4 players use external SSDs to store game content data, but PS5 games on the Internet are not only the content of their game program, but also game save data cannot be stored via SSD / HDD / USB external and other expansion storage spaces. , It can only be stored in the PS5’s built-in SSD host storage. What is the current support situation, let’s try it together.

▲ This time I borrowed several popular SSDs on the market to test them all with

Install game program content on PS5 SSD / external HDD

PS5 Game: No / PS4 Game: Yes

On the PS4, we can connect an external USB storage device, such as an external SSD / HDD, and install the entire game on these external storage devices. While playing PS4 games on PS5, you can also use this method to install games. This time I borrowed the SSD external box along with the M.2 NVMe Gen4 SSD, which can become a quick game install space.

Step 1

Insert the installed SSD box (or built-in external storage device) into the USB port on the back of the PS5 host. If it is plugged into the front interface, it can only be used to save game data (game save) and the game cannot be installed on the SSD.

Step 2

Turn on PS5 and open the settings screen, go to “Memory”> “Expand Memory”, you can format the SSD. If you installed the game on PS4 using an external storage device, you can go directly to PS5 without formatting and installing the game again.

Step 3

In the “floating items” section you will find that only PS4 games can be moved / installed to the expansion storage, i.e. external SSD / HDD, but PS5 games cannot. As of the deadline (November 2020), the PS5 can only be stored in the PS5’s built-in SSD.

Game Save data has been moved to PS5 external SSD / HDD

PS5 Game: No / PS4 Game: Yes

PS5 game save data (game save file) also can’t be stored in external storage? We go to “Save data and games”> “Save data (PS5)” from the PS5 menu and find that there is no option for external storage space, that is, the game save cannot be moved to an SSD / HDD / finger external, etc. . Currently, PS5 game data can be backed up to the cloud via PlayStation Network.

▲ When you select “Save Data (PS4)”, you can see the “USB Hard Drive” option, which means we can transfer the PS4 game save to an external storage device

▲ You can choose to copy to PS4 game by saving it to external USB

PS5 expansion slot connected to M.2 SSD test: not supported in the initial release

Don’t be discouraged, even if the PS5 fails to install the game on an external SSD / HDD, the PS5’s body has a hidden “expansion slot” just like the PS4 can replace the internal HDD in the past. Install an additional M.2 SSD. To uncover this expansion slot is easy, simply hold the two opposite corners of the fuselage firmly with both hands as shown in the image below, then use some force to open the lid.

SSD for testing:

▲ WD_Black GAMING NVMe 1TB SSD, up to 3430MB / s

▲ ADATA SWORDFISH M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3x4 SSD, 500GB

You can find the “expansion slot” of the PS5 console After removing the screws, you can see the M.2 SSD slot. You can install M.2 SSD inside it, so that your PS5 has extra space for use. We have tested some SSDs on the market with extremely thick heatsinks, which can be installed in the “expansion slot” and can be completely covered.

▲ Unscrew the screws of the outer cover

However, at the moment (November 2020) PS5 is on sale, the “expansion slot” has not been opened. Sony will open this slot via software updates in the future, so users will have to wait patiently. Sony advises users to wait for their news to open this slot before purchasing an M.2 SSD storage device.

▲ At the moment, PS5 is not open to expansion slots and will be forced to shut down

Summary: PS5 games can only be stored on the console’s internal SSD at the start of the sale

After deducting the system files, the new PS5 has 667GB of usable built-in storage, but since PS5 games can only be installed in the built-in console storage, the only way to install new games after the Integrated SSD is full and delete old games, Re-download from PSN / install physical game disc when needed.

▲ I can’t install the game again …

▲ PS5 is not really good enough for SSDs …

▲ The capacity of most of the games in the PS5 version is very large … Such an SSD will soon blow up

Sony Official Answer 1: The future PS5 can store game content on an external storage device

In fact, Sony previously admitted via PlayStation.Blog that PS5 games do not support external SSDs and that game program content can only be stored in the built-in host storage. However, they said they are currently investigating future updates to allow gamers to store game program content on PS5 external storage devices, but indicated that the search is for archival purposes only and does not allow players to play games.
