New crew
As part of the move to US President-elect Joe Biden, he has appointed a team of eight volunteers to join him.
The team includes a diverse mix of NASA personnel including a former astronaut and several key scientists, according to Space.com. Although the team is made up of temporary volunteers – they are not Biden’s cabinet members as much as transitional period assistants – its composition illustrates a much deeper commitment to gender and racial diversity than NASA’s current leadership. Over the next couple of months, the team will help Biden rise to power and prepare them for NASA’s future under their leadership.

Biden’s transition website also defines the list of each of the agency’s review teams specific to its department. In addition to the scientists, Biden also contacted an ACLU leader who served as interim director of the presidential personnel office during the Obama administration.
“The agency’s review teams are responsible for understanding each agency’s operations,” the site reads, “ensuring a smooth transfer of power and preparing for President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris and their cabinet for start work on day One. “
Great transition
The team will have their work cut out, especially considering the recent announcement by current NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine that he will leave NASA once Biden replaces Trump. However, to her credit, Bridenstine oversaw NASA as it made great strides to promote women in space and pledged to send the first woman to the moon.
But Biden is no stranger to NASA either. During the Obama administration, Biden would play an important role in NASA operations, also helping coordinate the space agency’s ongoing collaboration with SpaceX.
