Many businesses will be closed on Wednesday to celebrate Remembrance Day, and many traditional ceremonies will also be changed this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ceremonies across the Halifax region will be curtailed this year and people are advised to check with their local legion for possible virtual observances. The Memorial Day ceremony at the Halifax Grand Parade will be closed to the public.
The Royal Canadian Legion in Nova Scotia has asked the audience to stay home and reflect on what the veterans have sacrificed.
Veteran nursing homes in Nova Scotia that would normally be open for Remembrance Day will also be closed to the public. A notice from the Nova Scotia Health Authority states that each facility will personalize their events while ensuring the health of residents.
The following veteran long-term care facilities will be closed to the public on Holocaust Remembrance Day:
- Glace Bay
- Harbourview Hospital (Sydney Mines)
- Northumberland Veterans Unit at Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital (Pictou)
- Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building (Halifax)
- Veteran’s Place (Yarmouth)
- Soldiers Memorial Hospital (Middleton)
- Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital (Lunenburg)
Under the Remembrance Day Act, some retail businesses are required to close on November 11, including malls, department stores and grocery stores. There are some exceptions to the law, including drug stores, gas stations, and retail stores with no more than three employees working at the same time.
Here is a list of what’s open and what’s closed Wednesday in the Halifax region.
Grocery shop
- Walmart will be closed.
- Sobeys will be closed.
- Atlantic Superstore will be closed.
- Costco will be closed.
- Pharmaceutical market buyers will have different hours in different branches. Check their website for details.
- The Gateway Meat Market will be open with reduced hours from 8:30 to 18:00
Farmers’ markets
- The Halifax Seaport Farmers Market will be closed.
- The Bedford Basin Farmers Market will be open from 8:00 to 22:00
Alcohol dealers
- NSLC offices are closed.
- Halifax Bishop’s Cellar will be closed.
- The Propeller Brewing Company will be open on a regular basis.
- Nine Locks Brewing Company’s Tap Room and Cold Beer Store will be open from noon to midnight. The Dartmouth retail store will be open from noon to 9pm
- The Moosehead Cold Beer Store on Windmill Road will be open from noon to midnight.
Halifax Public Libraries
All Halifax public library locations will be closed.
Halifax transit
Halifax Transit will operate on its holiday schedule on Wednesday.
Veterans, military personnel and their accompanying family members will be offered free travel on buses and ferries. Halifax Transit requires military personnel to wear uniforms or show military ID cards when boarding.
Municipal recreational facilities
Many municipal recreational facilities will be closed. Check with individual properties to confirm opening hours. Cole Harbor Place will be open from noon to 8pm
Rubbish collection
There is no waste, recycling or green waste collection on Remembrance Day. The roadside pickup scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed to Saturday, November 14th.
The Otter Lake waste facility and the municipal recycling facility will both be closed on Wednesday.
Schools
All public schools in the province are closed
Canada Post
There is no collection or delivery of mail on Memorial Day. Most post offices will be closed. However, post offices managed by the private sector can be opened according to the operating hours of the host business.
Banks
All the banks are closed.
parking area
Parking will be free on Wednesday, but motorists will have to follow the other signs.

The contact center 311 will be operational on a regular basis, from 8:00 to 20:00
The three customer service centers that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed Wednesday, but reopen Thursday for normal business hours.
