SURREY, BC – A Surrey company that claims to be the first in BC to manufacture N95 respirator masks says it is ready to begin providing first-line healthcare workers – pending approval from Health Canada.
Eternity Medical Equipment opened a store in April and has spent the past few months building a $ 500,000 clean room, with two assembly lines capable of pumping 2.5 million masks per month.
“So far, we have not yet obtained Health Canada approval, even though we have performed many filtration tests over 99%,” said CEO Jeffrey Wang. “But there is still a lot of regulation from Health Canada. We need to get approval. “
On Tuesday morning the company invited the media to a grand opening ceremony and tour of its 13,000-square-foot facility in South Surrey.
Eternity Medical employs 17 people in the manufacturing process and says the number could double, or triple, if the company decides to add a second or even a third shift.
“I’m really excited because this is a Canadian product, made right here in Surrey,” said City Coun. Allison Patton, who attended on behalf of the city of Surrey. “It is at a very important time when we need these types of PPE.”
Wang said the company is eagerly awaiting Health Canada’s approval so they can begin meeting some of the demand COVID-19 has created for N95 respirators.
“Some nurses wear a mask a day. Then they reuse the mask over and over again. There is definitely a shortage of masks, “he said.
Pending approval, the company donated 14,000 masks to BC / Yukon Command of the Royal Canadian Legion for distribution to veterans and local legion personnel.
The Public Health Agency of Canada has not yet responded to a request from CTV News for information on the approval process and status of the Eternity Medical Equipment application.
