“We hope, at least starting today, that all agreements have been reached, that the European Space Agency will participate in the research on the moon,” he told radio station Ekho Moskvy.
According to Lemeshevsky, ESA will provide high-resolution cameras for the first spacecraft to be launched on the moon in 2019. These cameras are required for landing. In addition to this, ESA will provide a device to take lunar soil samples for the third lunar explorer.
In his words, the suppliers of other systems for lunar explorers have not yet been chosen. “It is entirely possible that ESA will take part in the development and production of the high-precision landing systems. He will be the third explorer,” he said.
“We invited Europeans to participate, they said ‘yes’ to the soil harvesting devices and ‘yes’ to the high-precision cameras for the 2019 spacecraft. However, talks on the high-precision landing are still ongoing. “, he added.
According to previous reports, EU countries will allocate € 1.4 billion to fund ESA’s research programs, including its participation in the International Space Station (ISS) and the Russia-EU ExoMars program.
