MOSCOW, October 27. / TAX /. The question of the United States’ intention to extract mineral resources on the moon will be discussed during the 75th session of the UN General Assembly at the request of Russia, State Space Corporation Roscosmos told TASS on Tuesday.
“Yes, it’s true [Roscosmos] is planning to, “the space agency said, responding to a question about Russia’s plans to raise the issue at the United Nations.
“The corresponding item was included in the agenda of the session. The matter will be raised on behalf of the Russian Federation in line with the procedure accepted at the UN,” Roscosmos said.
The head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, previously said that the privatization of the Moon contradicted international law and Russia would not allow it.
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order in April proclaiming Washington’s right to mine various metals and other mineral resources on the moon, particularly in the latter stages of the Artemis lunar program.
NASA later announced the Artemis Agreements, a set of standards on how to explore the Moon, which is said to be based on the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. NASA’s standards specifically concern the use of lunar resources and the idea to create so-called “safety zones” to prevent “harmful interference”.
The Artemis agreements provide for a series of bilateral agreements between the United States and partner countries.
