Tests of the new vacuum device, developed by the tech giant in collaboration with the JR East railway company, have shown that it is more efficient than indoor appliances.
Japan Railways, the group of companies that operate Japanese trains, and tech giant Panasonic have developed a device to retrieve wireless headphones from train tracks, local media reported.
Lately, the number of dropped headphones in that country has increased as passengers enter or exit wagons. Between July and September alone, around 950 cases occurred in 78 stations in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Rail operators across the country are facing similar cases, asking passengers to use wireless headphones more carefully and not try to retrieve them on their own under any circumstances.
Railway officials often use a gripping tool, however, it is often ineffective, so they have to pick them up at the end of the day.
To address the problem, operator JR East launched an initiative with Panasonic to invent a vacuum-type device to retrieve the headphones. Ongoing tests have shown that the new tool is much more efficient than the old one.
