Confectionery manufacturer Haribo is closing one of its five locations in Germany to date. At the end of the year, production at Haribo’s smallest German plant in Wilkau-Haßlau near Zwickau in Saxony will be discontinued, the family business announced on Friday. About 150 employees are affected.
For them, socially acceptable solutions must be found within the framework of a social plan. If possible, they will be offered a modification to one of the other German plants.
A recently completed profitability audit of production sites was crucial for the closure, Haribo said. As a result, the Wilkau-Haßlau site no longer meets the requirements for an economical and efficient production facility.
“Shock for the whole region”
The plant would require “disproportionately high investments” to align production processes with future needs. In the future, the confectionery manufacturer will group production at four locations in Germany: Bonn, Grafschaft, Neuss and Solingen.
The decision was the subject of sharp criticism in Saxony. “The closure within a few weeks is a shock to the whole region,” said Sabine Zimmermann, Zwickau DGB district president and member of the Bundestag. “The loss of jobs is particularly serious in the Corona crisis”. He asked Haribo management to look into alternatives to a closure and to continue operations.
At the Wilkau-Haßlau site, gummy bears were already produced in GDR times and delivered to the West. In 1990 the company then moved to Haribo.
