The best was good enough for BMW. When the Munich carmaker unveiled its first electric-powered model, the i3, seven years ago, it achieved it all: carbon bodywork, aluminum chassis, interior made from sustainable materials, and even production was CO-based.2-Reconstructed neutrality. A huge effort. And then? Absolute silence when it comes to new electric vehicles. While competitors Audi, Jaguar and Mercedes have taken a step on the gas with electric SUVs.
The second generation of Stromers is finally starting with the iX3 and BMW’s approach is now more pragmatic. Take the successful X3 model and simply build it with an underbody battery and an electric motor – that’s all. One body for all transmissions, from petrol and diesel to plug-in hybrid transmissions and pure electric motors, this is the much more affordable concept.
286 hp without all-wheel drive
In fact, Europe would have to be patient until next year – then with the iNext – probably slated to be the iX5 – the third generation of the Stromer will start in BMW. But the European CO2The limit values put pressure, which is why the iX3 not only arrives as expected in China, but also here. But without all-wheel drive. Because nobody needs it in China, even if an additional motor would have been placed on the front axle. The iX3 is built in Shenyang, China; as the first European BMW from the Far East.
The 4.73-meter SUV is powered by a 286-horsepower electric motor on the rear axle. It accelerates to 100 km / h in 6.8 seconds, but is limited to 180 km / h. More than enough for Switzerland and China, but in terms of performance it does not compete with the Audi E-Tron, Jaguar I-Pace or Mercedes EQC.
To drive: Electric motor, 210 kW (286 PS), 400 Nm @ 1 / min, 1-stage automatic, rear-wheel drive, 80.0 kWh battery
Driving performance: 0–100 km / h 6.8 sec, maximum 180 km / h (limited), WLTP range 450 km
Mass: Length / width / height 4.73 / 1.89 / 1.67 m, weight 2260 kg, loading space 510–1560 liters
Environment: WLTP consumption 19.0 kWh / 100 km (corresponds to petrol 2.1 l / 100 km), 0/0 g / km CO2, Energy A
Price: from 77,600 francs
But even the high speeds on the motorway would be detrimental to the range, because at every km / h the energy consumption increases exponentially. With its 80 kWh battery pack, the iX3 covers 450 kilometers, a relatively low consumption of 19.0 kWh per 100 kilometers for its size. Thanks to a maximum charging capacity of 150 kilowatts, it can be recharged from zero to 80 percent in just over half an hour; ten minutes is enough for 100 kilometers.
Fast run with full equipment
About 2.3 tons of curb weight requires stiffer springs and dampers, and you can feel that when cornering. But the quick and silent driving is convincing. As with other E models, there is normal D mode or a B mode (for the brakes) with maximum recovery. With practice you can brake in the latter without the mechanical brake.
The battery has enough space under the passengers, so the trunk remains from 510 to 1560 liters. And the iX3 shines with good standard equipment, for example with 19-inch alloy wheels, 3-zone automatic climate control with auxiliary heating, electric tailgate and panoramic glass roof. However, it will start in January 2021 for at least 77,600 francs.
The concept of the new iX3 is still yesterday’s news. After all, from 2025 all BMW Stromers will have their own platform. BMW CEO Oliver Zipse has already confirmed this.
