But things are also going very well in many other non-food areas. The negative dent of spring has already been smoothed out. As a result, Swiss retail trade in the first three quarters was overall 6.6% higher than in the previous year.
Sandra Wöhlert, retail expert at GfK: “The years with the greatest growth in retail in Switzerland are a long time ago. We are talking about 1991/90 and 2008/07, each with a plus of 4.2 percent “.

Company and shareholder closures are digested. Retail is doing as well as before the crisis, perhaps even better. “Many markets are benefiting from the current holiday and leisure trend ‘Hinterland, nature and home'”, says GfK. “DIY and home electronics are at the forefront of growth and continue to expand.”
Possible reasons for the increase: quarantine when traveling abroad and working from home. It is therefore reflected in the sales figures that the Swiss spend more time at home than in previous years. Shopping tourism is also down in the Corona year. This is why sales that would otherwise have flown overseas go to the retailers’ checkouts.
The bedrooms and living rooms are undergoing renovations and the home office is undergoing a technical update: GfK talks about “big, unlimited demand” for monitors, flat screen TVs, headphones, notebooks, PC cameras and microphones. More and more often also on the counter: vacuum cleaners, electric hair clippers, freezers, wine cellars, bread machines and sewing machines. And these are just a few examples.
Online shoppers are becoming more and more numerous
Why: “Electric bikes, fitness equipment and toys also work successfully,” adds GfK. The clothing market is recovering. If that doesn’t bode well for the whole year.
According to market researchers, the trend of online shopping has increased. Weeks ago, BLICK reported a spate of online hamsters looming. Delivery times for online orders in Coop and Migros grocery stores are getting longer.
If you order today from Migros Online (formerly Leshop.ch), you can expect food to be delivered only around 18 November. If other cantons are partially blocked, this trend is likely to intensify.
