Black holes, it emerges, are similar to buses. A group of astrophysicists who had waited decades to detect a single case of them merging in distant galaxies participated in dozens of such collisions in just six months.
When black holes collide they create something akin to sound waves: ripples in the very fabric of space that traverse the universe and Earth.
Physicists have been able to measure the frequency of this cosmic chime, after the world’s most sensitive scientific instruments detected dozens of cataclysms.
It’s been five years since physicists announced the first detection of a gravitational wave, a distortion in space one-thousandth the width of a proton, produced by the merger of multiple black holes.
