NASA sparked excitement and fear with a cryptic tweet posted to its account.
“PSST … Uh, has anyone heard … that?” he wrote, causing a flurry of speculation and concern among his tens of millions of followers.
Later, it would emerge that the account was simply promoting a new Soundcloud playlist of “sinister sounds of the solar system”.
Before that mystery was revealed, however, the unusual post led to speculation among followers that the space agency was announcing significant news and notes that, in 2020, that would likely have meant something negative.
But it also led to a flurry of other posts from related and official NASA accounts.
“Hmmm … From here to the house we just heard a lot of creaking and crackling in the distance,” wrote the NASA Earth account.
“Did it sound intergalactic, planetary? If it’s noisy and pulsating, let’s blame Jupiter … ”posted by NASA’s Solar System account.
“It sounded like something mysterious and otherworldly … unlike anything I’ve ever heard …” wrote the short story for the Mars Insight lander.
“According to my data and calculations, in fact I also hear sounds,” reads a post from the Chandra X-ray Observatory.
“You’ve heard the creaks, cracks and cackles of our universe before. Using data from our spaceship, our scientists collected NEW sinister sounds from the depths of space in time for Halloween, ”reads a description posted on the page.
“Listen to our playlist full of new” moans “and” whistles “from our universe that would scare even the most macabre creatures.”
