US aircraft manufacturer Boeing, which was hit hard by the Corona crisis, is cutting even more jobs: by the end of 2021, a total of 30,000 of the world’s 160,000 jobs will be eliminated. This is almost a fifth of all jobs.

Boeing announced Wednesday that about 7,000 more jobs are expected to be cut than previously planned. The loss in the third quarter amounted to $ 449 million (€ 382 million), sales fell about 29 percent year-on-year to $ 14.1 billion.

In the late summer of 2019, the manufacturer had made a profit of $ 1.2 billion, despite existing problems with the 737 Max, which had to remain on the ground after two accidents since March 2019. This year’s loss amounts to to $ 3.5 billion by the end of September.

The Boeing chief is optimistic

The corona pandemic continues to put pressure on the industry, Boeing chief Dave Calhoun said. “We are adapting to this new reality by adjusting our liquidity and making our company more alert, resilient and sustainable.”

On US broadcaster CNBC, Calhoun was optimistic that things would pick up this year because “the vaccine appears to be much further away than we imagined.”

There will be a “shift in awareness” by the end of the year. And then the recovery “will begin sooner rather than later”.
