The University of Bahrain will publish the diplomas on the blockchain, the local media in English published by Trade Arabia on January 13th.
According to the aforementioned article, the university uses the open Blockcerts standard in collaboration with Learning Machine, a startup that provides a system for issuing verifiable official records using a format anchored by blockchain.
As Cointelegraph reported in September last year, the government of Bahrain stressed the importance of blockchain technology for the country's economy, while urging the surveillance of information security. Abdulhussain Mirza, Minister for Electricity and Water of Bahrain, said:
"Blockchain's ability to protect user data is a real sign of progress, especially since it can be applied in a variety of companies in different industries, including IT security."
Trade Arabia reports today that the blockchain initiative of the university is part of a global digitization strategy for mobile students.
As reported by Cointelegraph, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has also issued blockchain-based digital certificates to more than 100 graduates as part of a pilot program starting mid-October 2017.
In a dedicated project analysis, Cointelegraph reported how MIT began issuing diplomas on the Bitcoin blockchain (BTC) through its Blockcerts platform in an attempt to distribute academic credentials while ensuring resistance to tampering and immutability.
The Blockcerts development team explained:
"Blockcerts provides a decentralized credential system.The Bitcoin blockchain acts as a trusted provider and credentials are tamper resistant and verifiable.The blockcerts can be used in the context of academic, professional and workforce credentials."
