Acciona Energía, a subsidiary of Acciona, specializing in renewable energy, has announced a project to realize the traceability of the renewable nature of its production of electricity throughout the world through blockchain technology.

The new project, called Greenchain, will allow Acciona Energía customers to track the electricity supplied, checking in real time and from anywhere that the energy comes from 100% renewable sources. This means that their customers who want to verify the performance of the company can do so anywhere in the world in real time.

To perform the first part of the development, they collaborated with the FlexiDAO digital energy service software specialist to continue the implementation of Greenchain in appropriate markets, including those that do not have energy certification schemes, like many countries in the world. ;Latin America.

FlexiDAO has previous experience with Accinona Energía to promote a commercial blockchain demonstrator showing the traceability of renewable energy production from five wind and hydro power plants throughout Spain.

FlexiDao CEO and co-founder Simone Accornero said: "We are demonstrating that renewable energy traceability is now a viable proposition that generates real value for the consumer, along with Acciona we want to be the pioneers in showing that this blockchain-based system is commercially viable. valid on a large scale ".

ACCIONA has previously experimented with the application of traceability through blockchain in its two renewable plants with energy storage in batteries in Spain: in Barásoain (with wind energy) and Tudela (with PV), both located in Navarra, in scope of the StoreChain project.

The director of the company's innovation, Belén Linares, added: "Tracing the renewable energy source is an ever-increasing demand, associated with the growth of the corporate contracts market. 39, green energy, and blockchain technology can greatly facilitate this service to customers all over the world. We are very pleased to take this first step along a path that will surely mark the trend in the coming years ".

Blockchain's ability to enable peer-to-peer energy transactions could significantly disrupt the energy sector, in particular by encouraging decentralization. The increasing use of small installations of renewable energy, such as solar panels on the roof, can create stress on the electrical networks designed taking into account large centralized power plants.

By allowing the sale of peer-to-peer energy and encouraging local consumption at the time of production, blockchain could stabilize the network, favoring this decentralization.
