The forces of openness and transparency seem to have won. The core developer meetings on Ethereum 1x, the next-gen version of the platform, will be recorded and streamed to the public after all.
On Friday, the main developers of Ethereum for the first time met it was not open to the public The invitation-only session was apparently tried, at the behest of developers looking for a "safe space" and feared trolls from twitter and unwanted media checks. Instead, the meetings were conducted according to the Chatham House Rule, where notes they were published after the fact and were not attributed.
The closed-door process has undermined some, including Greg Colvin, a veteran developer, known for his work on the Ethereum virtual machine. Colvin boycotted the meeting on Friday, rather than simply complaining about it.
"It's beyond the complaint," he said. "I will not attend these closed-door meetings of Chatham House Rule, people say they are afraid to say their idea and I say" well – you can read what they say later in the press, and complain that they did wrong. "
Colvin said the old system worked perfectly: "Everybody hears what's happening in real time." It's a recording, so there are no questions later on what was actually said. "
The decision to hold closed meetings had been exposed by Colvin at the beginning of November, following Devcon's fourth annual meeting.
