Four major blockchain companies established a "Blockchain for Europe" association, according to a press release dated December 5th. The association seeks to promote the proactive understanding and regulation of blockchain and other distributed accounting (DLT) technologies across the continent.

The four participating companies are Ripple, NEM Foundation, Emurgo – which supports the commercial initiatives based on the Cardano blockchain – and the Fetch.AI development company "with the intelligent ledger". The companies outlined the goal of the Association to address the "fragmented" European political debate on the blockchain, which they claim to be distorted by "inconsistent" information from those outside the emerging sector.

In an effort to improve the current state of affairs, the newly established association will aim to educate the institutions of the EU and Member States on the potential of technology. It will also promote a future "smart" regulation that will foster innovation and help the continent to "shape the global agenda" on the blockchain.

On November 27, the Association hosted a Blockchain for Europe conference at the European Parliament (EP) in Brussels, along with the four major groups of the European Parliament: the Group of the European People's Party (EPP), the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) and Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S & D).

The international conference addressed the potential of blockchain across sectors and used cases, including governance, health, transportation, trade, identity, financial market infrastructure and token / cryptocurrency.

At the start of this autumn, Italy became the newest member state of the EU to join another regional industrial group, the European Blockchain Partnership, whose members include the UK, France, Germany , Sweden, the Netherlands and Ireland. The partnership declared its objective "the establishment of a European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI) that will support the provision of cross-border digital public services, with the highest standards of security and privacy".
