THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced 33 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, all in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas.
A growing outbreak in Southbridge Roseview long-term care home accounts for 28 of these cases. The findings follow surveillance tests of residents and staff conducted on November 26, the health unit said.
Five other cases unrelated to the outbreak were announced on Sunday. Four were considered to be the result of close contact with an existing case, while one individual was determined to have been exposed while traveling outside the region.
Sunday’s announcement was the largest single-day leap in cases reported by the health unit since the pandemic reached Thunder Bay district in March, surpassing 21 cases reported on November 17.
There have been 94 active COVID-19 cases confirmed in the Thunder Bay district as of Sunday morning.
The health unit listed two people in hospital with the virus on Sunday and none in intensive care.
The vast majority of cases announced in recent weeks have occurred in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas, which as defined by the health unit includes Oliver Paipoonge, Neebing, Gillies, Shuniah, Conmee, O’Connor, and some unorganized territories.
The district saw a total of 303 cases, with three deaths. Two of these arrived in the last week: the virus caused the death of a man on Monday, while the death of a resident in Southbridge Roseview was announced on Saturday.
