With the rise in non-face-to-face consumption due to Corona 19 this year, the e-commerce sector has faced an unprecedented boom.
As the news from Amazon, the world’s largest e-commerce company, enters Korea, the tensions are in the domestic retail price.
Reporter Gye Hoon-hee reports it.
[기자]The industry responded by saying it was unexpected that Amazon, a global retailer, had chosen 11st, a subsidiary of SK Telecom.Amazon is the number 1 e-commerce company in six countries, including the US and the UK, but the 11th position only ranks fourth in Korea after Naver, Coupang and eBay Korea in terms of transaction value.
But also for Amazon, Korea is certainly a market not to be missed.
The domestic e-commerce market has grown rapidly, surpassing 100 trillion won last year from 38 trillion won in 2013, and 160 trillion won is expected this year.
It is also expected to rank third in the global e-commerce market next year after China and the United States.
The distribution industry is paying close attention to the news of Amazon’s entry into Korea, saying there will be no significant changes immediately.
Leading companies such as Coupang, which right now supports the “Korean version of Amazon,” and Naver, the number one search and shopping in Korea, are in an emergency.
Naver worked with CJ Logistics, number 1 in the package delivery industry, to solve the problem of delivery, which is considered a weak point.
GS Retail merged with its subsidiary, GS Home Shopping, to strengthen online.
In response to the news of subsequent partnerships and mergers, large companies like Shinsegae and Lotte, which are traditional strong players in the distribution sector, as well as mid-tier companies like Interpark and Timon, are very excited about the news.
This year, the industry was “ booming ” due to the 19 Crown incident, but competition has also become more intense.
Ecommerce companies are expected to expand their scale, find ways to differentiate between products and delivery, and find survival strategies for each.
