YB pulls the classics thanks to Nsame and Elia – and thus keeps the FCB at a distance

YB – Basel 2: 1

Raiffeisen Super League, 8th round, 20/21 season

21.11.2020

Young Boys win their permanent rivals’ first duel of the season 2-1 against FC Basel in Bern. Striker Meschack Elia scored the winning goal in the 61st minute.

The sequence of goals (0: 1, 1: 1, 2: 1) was the same as in the cup final on 30 August. After Elia’s goal, who pulled back on a short pass from Jean-Pierre Nsame, got the better of a defender and found themselves unsustainable in the far corner, Young Boys dominated the action until the end. Basler, for whom Pajtim Kasami played in defensive midfield, could not dominate in the finals and had no high-profile chances. YB was – for example with the possibility of replacing Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu – 3-1 closer than Basel to equalize.

For the Young Boys, however, the same was true in the big game as in most league matches this season – they create many real scoring chances without capitalizing on them in a normal relationship. It was the case of the 0-0 against Servette in Geneva, the 1-0 against Vaduz and Lucerne and more clearly the last 0-0 in Wankdorf against St. Gallen. In the first seven rounds of the Super League, the Bernese scored exactly one goal per game. Remember the 2018/19 season when YB set the Super League record average of 2.75 with 99 goals.

Nsame inaugurates the turning point

The Bernese’s first goal just before half-time was actually a curiosity. Goalkeeper David von Ballmoos tried to stimulate the game from a distance outside the box. With the high ball deep, he checked on Basel’s defensive. Jean-Pierre Nsame ran a few steps with the ball into goal and defeated goalkeeper Heinz Lindner, who replaces Djordje Nikolic in quarantine, with an unsustainable low shot.

At the time it was 0: 1. The Young Boys lost their chances at regular intervals, while Basler used an Arthur Cabral penalty foul, which Silvan Hefti owed Afimico Pululu after 22 minutes.
