In 2019, foldable smartphones entered the world market with more or less success. But after the success of Samsung and the excellent sales of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Flip this year, more and more manufacturers have begun to show interest in foldable models and have started working on such phones.

Chinese company Xiaomi he was one of them. Recently, Xiaomi filed a patent application for several foldable models with a pop-up camera.

The Chinese tech giant filed for the design patent in September 2020 at the International Design System in The Hague, which is part of the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO). The company previously patented a foldable phone that had a similar design to the original Samsung Galaxy Fold smartphone, with a foldable display on the inside and a secondary display on the outside. Now, the new patent also has the same design, but with the inclusion of a compliant pop-up camera GizmoChina.

When opened, the device has a large screen, which looks like a normal tablet. A vertically positioned three-chamber module is located at the rear. The hinge divides both halves of the vertical device in the center. The front is surrounded by negligible bezels on each side, which essentially provides a full viewing area. Reaching its most interesting aspect, the pop-up selfie camera is housed in the top right half of the device. This allows it to be used as a selfie shooter with a larger main display and a smaller external display.

This is a novelty compared to all the other foldable phones launched so far. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, Galaxy Z Flip, Motorola Razr they don’t have a pop-up room.

Unfortunately, no details are currently known about this smartphone. This is just a patent application, so it’s not certain whether the Chinese tech giant is actually working on this smartphone. The MWC 2021 event is an excellent opportunity that Xiaomi always uses to launch innovative new products and it is not excluded to see this phone launched there. So, we may soon find out more about Xiaomi’s first foldable smartphone.
