Xiaomi Mi Band 5 could receive a new update: it will be able to record body temperature to improve health functions

Xiaomi Mi Band 5 fitness trackers, as well as older ones in the same series, may soon receive the ability to measure body temperature. The rumor is based on the source code discovered in Xiaomi’s accompanying applications which seem to suggest that the devices will receive this functionality through an update.

Those from AndroidTR were the ones who noticed mentions of body temperature versus external devices in the source code of fitness apps. The data seem to suggest that comparison tests are performed with mercury thermometers and temperature patches.

At the same time, the source code seems to mention and supported devices: Mi Band 2, Mi Band 3, Mi Band 4, Mi Band 5 and Amazfit Band 5. None of these fitness trackers include body temperature sensors. This could suggest that Huami (the company that makes Xiaomi and Amazfit portable devices) is exploring the use of existing optical sensors and dedicated thermometers to calibrate the tracker to provide information on body temperature. It also mentions the ability to manually upload data, to view recorded data, along with body temperature details. There is also a menu that mentions the minimum, maximum and average temperature.

Will Huami be able to implement the function?

Body temperature measurement or monitoring is a topical issue, especially due to the pandemic. A high temperature is one of the common symptoms associated with respiratory disease. It would be a great achievement if Huami could implement it and launch it on current and older devices.

However, we look with skepticism at the possibility of implementing this feature. Based on this source code, of course, the company is still exploring the functionality, but it could end up being released following a software update. This would be a very welcome feature given the situation we are in. The latest bracelet launched by the manufacturer is Xiaomi Mi band 5 and is also available in Romania through eMAG.ro.
