On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, the Minister of Health, Professor Abderrahmane Benbouzid, hosted a conference on Sunday 15 November under the slogan “Diabetes and Covid-19 can be avoided”.
During his speech, on the sidelines of the World Diabetes Day celebration on Sunday 15 November, the Minister of Health, Professor Abderrahmane Benbouzid, revealed that “the prevalence rate of diabetes among adults in Algeria has reached 14, 4%, or about 2.8 million people ”, underlining that“ type 2 diabetes is a real health problem in the world, because the number of adults affected by this disease in the world is 520 million ”.
Regarding the current health situation, linked to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, the first head of the health sector in Algeria said that “people suffering from diabetes are more likely to develop complications and more serious forms of Covid19” .
In this same context, Professor Benbouzid said that “people with weak immune systems, people over the age of 75 and people living with a chronic disease, such as diabetes, are considered at risk.”
Furthermore, the Minister of Health also indicated that “diabetes does not increase the risk of contracting the virus, but that it can potentially increase the risks of developing serious symptoms and complications if COVID-19 is contracted”, adding that “the complications more common are pneumonia and acute respiratory distress. In some cases, COVID-19 can lead to death “.
