“Wonder Woman 1984,” the last potential blockbuster left on the 2020 film calendar, will be released both in theaters and on WarnerMedia’s new streaming service, HBO Max, on December 25, the company announced Wednesday.
The news was expected, as many cities across the country closed cinemas in an effort to stem an increase in Covid-19 cases. Internationally, the film will be released in theaters on December 16.
Warner Bros. made the announcement four months after the studio attempted to lure viewers to theaters with the summer release of director Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet.” That film generated approximately $ 353 million worldwide, with only $ 56 million coming from US audiences. The $ 200 million sci-fi movie is expected to lose studio money.
With the box office so uncertain, a streaming debut should provide a boost to HBO Max, which has struggled to generate consumer excitement since it started in May. WarnerMedia said “Wonder Woman 1984” will be available to stream for one month at no additional cost to subscribers, which as of last month totaled 38 million.
Offering a superhero movie over the holidays, when many are expecting much of the country to shut down, may just be the perk the company is looking for. (This week, WarnerMedia announced that HBO Max will be available on Amazon’s Fire Stick. It’s not yet available with Roku streaming technology.)
