When will Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes agree on a new contract? It has been an ongoing saga, although both sides have insisted it is – to a large extent – a formality. And with the recently crowned seven-time world champion recovering from Covid-19, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff admits the timing for negotiations has slipped again …
Hamilton is absent from the Sakhir Grand Prix after posting a positive result at Covid-19 before the race, so any chance the 38-year-old Brit might have taken to sit down with Wolff in Bahrain is not possible.

“The timeline is postponed until it resumes,” Wolff said. “We know we have to do it – we both know quite well – but the priority now is for him to get back on his feet and be it [Covid] negative. Then we will meet or Zoom to put pen to paper. “
One thing Wolff wanted to point out is that the way George Russell – Hamilton’s replacement this weekend – performs will have no impact on the negotiations.

Asked if Russell’s performance could affect Hamilton’s market value, Wolff replied, “No. We know what we have with Lewis and he knows what he has with the team. Such a situation would have been used as a kind of bargaining power,” neither from him nor from us.It could go both ways.
“I have a lot of respect for who he is and how he drives, his records and whatever happens this weekend or next has no bearing on our talks.”
