Microsoft is working on a technology that will allow developers to bring Android applications to Windows with minimal code changes.
The Windows manufacturer will launch what it calls “Project Latte” next year – a system through which applications developed for Android can run on Windows 10.
The subsystem that will allow the running of Android applications will be based on the Windows subsystem for Linux, which will receive support for hardware acceleration, thus improving the performance of these applications.
With the future subsystem, Android applications will run directly or with little modification on Windows.
Microsoft will not be able to include in Windows and Play Services, the platform that Google has developed only for devices with Android and Chrome OS. This means that developers will need to remove references to Play Services from applications before they can run on Windows.
Currently, the options for running Android applications on Windows are limited. There are programs that emulate the entire Android, and official Microsoft support is limited to a few Samsung phones.
Microsoft flirted with this idea, working on a project called Astoria several years ago, but gave up.
If “Project Latte” did not have the same fate, it would be rolled out at the launch of the Windows 10 update next fall.
