Countries with declining COVID-19 numbers have yet to remain “vigilant,” a World Health Organization (WHO) official said Friday.
“Even though the number of cases is going down, all countries need to remain vigilant. You’ve heard of it before, but we really need to emphasize it again. Don’t let your guard down,” Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO Technical Head of Health Emergency Program he said during a virtual briefing.
“It’s nice to see the measures coming into effect and the transmission down. But it’s not the time to give up. It’s also the time to step up,” added Van Kerkhove.
According to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University, global COVID-19 cases have surpassed 61 million with the death toll reaching 1.4 million.
“What we don’t want to see are situations where you are moving from a so-called blocking state to keep the virus in check to a so-called blocking state,” he warned.
