It can be said especially well around the eyes that someone has been getting little sleep. But where do the dark shadows under the eyes come from?
First of all: the impression of dark circles is created by the slightly sunken area and a darker skin color around the eye area. The skin color is darker because the skin around the eyes is very thin (thin like no other on the whole body) and also hardly any fat is deposited. The thin blood vessels shine through the transparent layer.
Constant stress or strain on the eyes can also cause the unsightly rings. Exhausted skin cells lose water, which makes the underlying veins easier to see.
There’s also a reason why shadows are particularly dark right after getting up. Due to slowed circulation in lymph during sleep, tissue fluid can collect under the eyes and expand blood vessels. We perceive it as dark circles.
