What is retinol and what is it used for?

[ad_1]

Surely you have heard the benefits of using retinol in cosmetics for rejuvenated skin on more than one occasion, but do you know that it has many more medical applications? Maintaining and improving eyesight is one of its main benefits, so a diet rich in vitamin A will be highly recommended after a certain age.

What is retinol?

Retinol is an active form of Vitamin A. In addition to improving the appearance of the skin, it helps us maintain good eyesight, bone and soft tissue growth, and the immune system, among others.

It is located in animal livers, kidney, cod, egg yolk and whole milk, as well as in fish oils. Most green leafy vegetables are rich in vitamin A, as are grains.

Our body can also make retinol using a substance found in some orange and yellow fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, spinach, broccoli, sweet potatoes and melons.

Vitamin A supplements are indicated for those suffering from poor nutrition or malabsorption, cystic fibrosis, diabetes mellitus, severe biliary obstruction, pancreatic or eye disease, severe malnutrition or measles, among others.

Additionally, vitamin A is recommended in high doses for people with acne problems. Similarly, it is also recommended for those suffering from age-related macular degeneration problems.

The recommended daily allowance for vitamin A is 900 micrograms for adult men and 700 for adult women. Its excess can be harmful to health, causing nausea, vomiting, dizziness or blurred vision.

Vitamin A can interact with other medications and cause health problems. People who are taking anticoagulants, bexacarotenes, hepatotoxic drugs, orlistat or retinoids, could increase the risk of other diseases, therefore, it is advisable to consult a doctor if in doubt.

Retinol in cosmetics

Retinol is a widely used cosmetic product due to its great ability to reduce blemishes, wrinkles and expression lines. And this is due to the ability of vitamin A to penetrate the skin, stimulating the creation of new cells and increasing the production of collagen. Retinol slows down age-typical skin thinning, restoring elasticity and improving its texture.

The cosmetic products that we can consume freely contain retinol in low concentrations since at high concentrations they are used only in dermatology for its side effects.
