The health pressure caused by Covid has highlighted the precariousness of primary and community care (PCA) in Catalonia.
In recent months, the lack of resources and health workers to be able to deal with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic from the APyC has made headlines.
Between 2009 and 2018, APyC investments in Catalonia decreased by 24%. The underfunding accumulated over all these years is causing pernicious effects from which users and healthcare professionals suffer.
The lack of nursing professionals adds to the endemic deficit of PCA investments in Catalonia. Catalan public health, according to the OECD, must incorporate 40% more nurses to reach the average for advanced countries.
The problem becomes more acute when we talk specifically about APyC. The shortage of nurses is already a major problem in Catalan public health, but it seems that the health authorities do not consider it a priority.

The government should provide APyC with the budget that ensures safe and quality health care.
The nurses ratio should comply with the OECD recommendations, ie 9 nurses per 1,000 population.

These changes would allow us to speak of excellent and benchmark public health. But nurses are not a priority for the government of the Generalitat, nor have we ever been for any Catalan executive in the last 40 years.
Despite studies supporting the benefits of increasing nursing ratios in hospitals and primary care centers, policy makers in 2020 continue to ignore this evidence.
The conclusions of the studies are conclusive: the increase in the number of nurses in all sectors of public health would positively influence the reduction in morbidity, mortality and health expenditure.
Furthermore, the development of nursing would improve the health of all citizens, promote gender equality and foster economic growth “

No government wanted to take on the professional recognition of nurses, the improvement of working conditions, wages and our participation in all social and health policy decisions.
