Wave of protest too big – TC Old Boys won’t get around the block after all

Today, among other things, it is forbidden to play tennis in the city canton. The Old Boys Basel tennis club reacted to these measures and decided to carry out only part of the tennis training during the partial block in a hall in Allschwil. Because training has not yet been banned in the neighboring canton of Basel-Landschaft. The club has received a lot of criticism for this approach and has now decided to cancel all training sessions.

The decision caused a stir

The president of the tennis club, Marianne Bernet, reached out to club members on Sunday to communicate the cancellation and to comment on last week’s controversial decision. This, Bernet writes, “caused a sensation”. This was not in the interest of the club. In the decision to move the courses to the Basel area, the club was also supported by a proven expert. So this was done carefully.

Furthermore, the four courses that should have taken place on the Baselbiet soil are only four courses in which 13 juniors took part. “Many of our kids train in the winter already in Basel due to the lack of space in our facility,” continues the letter. Circumventing Covid rules in the canton of Basel-Stadt “was never the intention”.

According to Old Boys spokesman Sebastian Briellmann, the club’s transparent communication has been very well received by members. They had no complaints.
