More than 2.5 million people at risk in England will receive a free supply of vitamin D from the government, officials said.

Nursing homes in England will automatically receive additional supplies for residents in the plans announced on Saturday.

Those on the clinically extremely vulnerable list will have the option to opt for home delivery.

Free shipping will begin in January, providing 2.7 million people with four months of vitamin D.

Public Health England (PHE) advises everyone to take 10 micrograms of vitamin D daily between October and early March, especially the elderly, people who do not go out and those with dark skin.

Vitamin D is often referred to as the sunshine vitamin because between late March and late September, most people should be able to get all the vitamin D they need from the sun.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: “Due to the incredible sacrifices the British people have made to control the virus, many of us have spent more time indoors this year and may be vitamin D deficient.

“The government is taking action to ensure that vulnerable people have access to a free supply to make them last through the darkest winter months.

Research is underway on the link between vitamin D and protection against Covid-19, including a project at Queen Mary University to determine whether correcting people’s vitamin D deficiencies during the winter can reduce the risk and / or severity of Covid. -19 and other acute respiratory infections.

Mr. Hancock asked PHE and the National Institute for Excellence in Health and Care (Nice) to review the existing evidence on the link between vitamin D and Covid-19 “to be sure to explore all potential opportunities to defeat this virus” .
