EXCLUSIVE: Although there have been questions about the big movies having their theatrical release dates over the holidays right now COVID, Universal’s World news is cementing a plan for theatrical release in the United States, getting its international release via Netflix. Deadline learns that the costume drama directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Tom Hanks is making a deal to have its overseas distribution run via Netflix, which has done so on other images but not one that big.

The deal is being worked out as we speak, and this will be good news for cinemas in the United States as the film makes its way into Oscar season. The image will be released on PVOD as early as 17 days after its theatrical release on December 25th. It will continue to hold screens. This is possible thanks to Uni’s agreement with AMC.

The deal with Netflix will keep him eligible for BAFTAs overseas, but offers the image a large global audience. It’s an interesting model for distribution as the company works its way through the limits of the coronavirus pandemic.

Hanks supports a Civil War veteran who agrees to hand over a girl, taken by the Kiowa people years ago, to his aunt and uncle, against his will. They travel hundreds of miles and face serious dangers along the way. The film reunites Greengrass and Hanks; teamed up with Captain Phillips, who garnered six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.

Greengrass wrote the script with Luke Davies based on the novel by Paulette Giles. Hanks’ Playtone partner Gary Goetzman produced with Gregory Goodman and Gail Mutrux.

Universal has shown an ongoing commitment to the theatrical market. Focus Features had the highest-grossing motion pictures in the past two weeks with Come Play and Let Him Go with Kevin Costner-Diane Lane. The studio has six titles including the Greengrass-Hanks movie on its calendar until the end of the year.
