The United Nations Children’s Fund “UNICEF” reported that 22,000 children in Nigeria contracted acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) last year.
This is what emerges from the organization’s report on World AIDS Day, which corresponds to 1 December of each year.
The organization said HIV infected 22,000 Nigerian children, aged 0 to 14, in 2019.
He added that the number of children infected with the virus in the country has reached 150,000 children so far, expressing concern.
The same source indicated that 110,000 children worldwide lost their lives in 2019 due to their AIDS infection, including 13,000 in Nigeria.
Since its emergence, the AIDS virus has claimed the lives of 1.6 million Nigerians.
The first case of AIDS virus infection dates back to June 1981 in the United States.
The AIDS virus attacks the human immune system, interrupts its effectiveness by weakening the body’s immune defenses, the virus exposes the body to the risk of infections from various diseases.
If the virus is left untreated, the infected person is exposed to many types of virulent diseases and cancers called “opportunistic diseases” because they take advantage of the human body’s inability to defend itself to better infect it.
