Udo’s life – it was like a fairy tale! BZ traces the extraordinary career of the famous hairdresser who passed away on Friday at the age of 76.

Udo Walz grew up in the Swabian province of Waiblingen (Baden-Württemberg). His parents ran a fruit and vegetable business. Walz When he was six, his father ran off with the nanny. His mother Hilde worked in a factory to support Walz and his two sisters.

The passion for the hairdressing profession was awakened in Walz at the age of 14. During this time he worked on a trial at a friend’s hairdresser. Followed by three years of apprenticeship in Stuttgart and commitments in Zurich and St. Moritz. In the paradise of the Swiss jet set, he has styled legends such as Marlene Dietrich († 90).

He had his first sex at the age of 17 – with a woman! He was even engaged, but on Christmas Eve Walz left his sweetheart – for a man …

Walz in Berlin

When he was 18, Walz moved to Berlin. He found his first job there in Ina Seiler living in Nürnberger Strasse. He finally opened his first shop in 1968, on the first floor of a house on Fasanenstrasse in Charlottenburg. But it was more like a living room than a real hairdresser.

In 1985 Walz finally opened his shop in Kudamm. It’s one of five hairdressing salons Walz was the last owner of. They are located near the Kudamm in Berlin on Roseneck and Friedrichstrasse. Outside Berlin, there is one in Potsdam and another in Mallorca.

Over the years more and more celebrities, including Angela Merkel (66), have been among her clients. When she needed an appointment, that wasn’t arranged in her office – she supposedly always called herself.

The love of her life was her husband Carsten. 27 years ago it went on the radio on Christmas Eve. Udo had a party of lonely hearts. A friend brought Carsten with him. The couple lived in a villa in Berlin-Schmargendorf.
