Daniel Dubois coach defended his fighter after taking a knee and admitted his fight with Joe Joyce on Saturday.
Joyce took the European, British and Commonwealth heavyweight belts with the win after Dubois decided he couldn’t continue after suffering an eye injury.
It was later confirmed that the 23-year-old Londoner had suffered an orbital fracture during the fight, as well as suspected nerve damage. Repeated blows to his left eye also resulted in swelling that prevented him from seeing out.
Several fighters including David Haye, Carl Frampton and Dillian Whyte suggested that Dubois had “quit” and criticized his determination, but coach Martin Bowers disagreed.
Speaking to 5 Live Boxing, Bowers said, “What do we want to see, a child loses an eye?
“Going into round 10 I said we had three rounds left in the fight and one in the eye,” he said.
“The next round, whatever happens, I was pulling it out.
“As I said, I turned around and Daniel was on his knees. I could see he wasn’t there. He wasn’t there because he didn’t have the bottle. People who say they’re twisted and wrong.”
Kudos to Joe Joyce, I just dealt with anything Dubois hit him with. There’s no nice way to say it, but Dubois went away. I was hit with a clean blow on a damaged eye and pulled it out. He is young but if you have the end in you then 🤷🏻♂️ there will always be a doubt about him.

Bowers praised Dubois, who faced perhaps his first serious pushback by an opponent in his career, which saw him meet Joyce as an undefeated prospect.
He continued: “It’s because they’re in real fights with real fighters. I was trying to make him understand,” You want to be one of them and you have it in you? “
“It’s brutal. Boxers who step into the ring are special people. People who say he got his knee are crap. I don’t have it.”
Meanwhile, Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn joined the chorus of boxers who believed Dubois had given up.
Speaking on an Instagram broadcast, he said, “I think it was around the fourth or fifth round I thought, ‘He doesn’t like this.’ He went to the corner and the corner team was saying things like, ‘Come on! fighting game! ‘
“I thought,“ Calm down, it’s only round four. ”And I think they knew he was mentally weak. Not sure?
“You know what, I always feel like it’s hard for a non-fighter to tell a fighter he left,” he added.
“I think you have to look at what the fighters say. Every fighter says Dubois has quit. So I guess, in boxing terms, yes.”
Hearn suggested that Dubois promoter Frank Warren had failed the heavyweight by plunging him into a high-level fight without allowing him an intermediate pass.
“I think it will be very difficult to get back from that but, in the end, I think they rushed him. I thought they corresponded really badly to Dubois.
“Sam Jones was right; they never gave him that middle battle. They went from the English title to the world top 15, because that’s what Joe Joyce is. “
