Neon has released the full official trailer for “Gunda,” an experimental black and white film about farm animal life that took this year’s Berlin Film Festival by storm. “Gunda” is the latest in a trilogy of nature films by Russian documentarian Victor Kossakovsky, whose 2018 film “Aquarela” broke the technological barriers to examine water in various forms around the world. After seeing a first cut of “Gunda,” Academy Award winner Joaquin Phoenix was so impressed with the film that he became an executive producer. Phoenix has a long history of advocating for animal rights and related issues (including in its 2020 Academy Award acceptance speech).
According to the official synopsis: “Experiential cinema in its purest form, ‘Gunda’ tells the unfiltered life of a mother pig, a flock of chickens and a herd of cows with masterful intimacy. Using merciless, transcendent black-and-white photography and the farm’s ambient soundtrack, director Victor Kossakovsky invites audiences to slow down and experience life as his subjects do, admiring their world with magical patience and an otherworldly perspective. “Gunda” asks us to meditate on the mystery of animal consciousness and to deal with the role that humanity plays in it “.
The trailer opens with this shrill approval from none other than Paul Thomas Anderson: “‘Gunda’ is pure cinema,” says the director of “Phantom Thread”. “This is a film to bathe in – it’s stripped of its essentials, without any interference. In his rave review outside Berlin, IndieWire’s Eric Kohn wrote: “Kossakovsky’s fascinating non-narrative experiment creeps into the center of his subject’s nervous system, encountering creatures on their terms in a remarkable request for empathy that begs only for carnivores to think twice as a result. “
