The racing team has suggested freezing the engines from 2022 so that they can continue using Honda technology on their own. Surprisingly, they also found an ally in Mercedes, but Motorsport Director Toto Wolff says there will be no freezing.

Why: Ferrari and Renault have clearly positioned themselves and opposed the freezing of technology. “And if two engine manufacturers disagree, it can’t be introduced,” says the Austrian. “They will have their reasons for refusing,” he says. “They were very clear about their point of view, so unfortunately I don’t see him coming.”
An alternative proposal, if the freeze doesn’t work, would be a so-called performance balancing regulation, where producers are artificially slowed down to make the pitch more balanced. But Wolff doesn’t think so at all: “That would be the beginning of the end of Formula 1”, he clarifies.
Because for Wolff this argument would not work in other racing series and would lead to great discussions again and again. “And in a sport that has always been a competitive company to introduce something like this, the whole DNA of the sport would be undermined. That would be the time when we all put this aside.”
