The name of this meteor shower comes from the traces of its shooting stars that seem to come out from a point in the constellation of Leo (the radiant). The Leonid swarm is normally active during the month of November, when the Earth crosses the orbit of comet Tempel-Tuttle. There are the remains of this comet responsible for the meteor shower.
In 2020, Leónidas has crossed the skies since last November 6 and will continue to do so until the end of the month, November 30, but the activity of maximum intensity takes place this evening (towards the interior).
Since this constellation only begins to rise after midnight in the northeast, observations should begin in the second half of the night, advises the Lisbon Astronomical Observatory.
In addition, the suggestions are the usual ones to better enjoy a show like this: avoid the light pollution of big cities and look for a horizon without obstacles.
Given the moment lived and, specifically, given the curfew that prevails in most Portuguese municipalities, the maximum will be when the windows or the balcony of the house have these characteristics. But of course you will only have the right to enjoy the show if the sky is clear of clouds …
Other shows on November nights
The Leonids aren’t the only shooting stars this month: it also rains in the Oriónidas de Novembro (250 NOO) – named after its radiant in the constellation of Orionte. The period of activity of the Oriónidas de Novembro began on the 13th last and extends until 6 December. The peak takes place on November 28th.
Also at the end of the month there is a penumbral moon eclipse, but only five minutes: the eclipse starts at 7:30 am and the Moon sets at 7:35 am on November 30th.
