Toby Jones and Anthony Boyle have been announced to star in the upcoming BBC drama Two Danny Boy, filming for which has just begun.

The feature is described by the BBC as a “gripping new drama” and will tell the story of a former war hero who finds himself accused of murder, based on the real-life experiences of Iraqi veteran Brian Wood.

Wood, who is played in the series by Ordeal By Innocence star Boyle, was charged with war crimes by the Iraq Historical Abuse Team, represented by human rights lawyer Phil Shiner, played by Jones, with the couple subsequently stranded in a legal battle that led to one of the largest public inquiries ever carried out in the country.

Eventually, the investigation found that the claims against Wood were false and the “product of willful lies” and Shiner was canceled for misconduct.

The drama was written by Party Animals screenwriter Robert Jones and will be directed by Sam Miller (I May Destroy You), with a supporting cast including Alex Ferns (Chernobyl) as Wood’s father, Gavin and Leah McNamara (Normal People) as his wife. Lucy.

The BBC’s description continues: “Memory, evidence and trauma collide, as Brian finds himself trapped on the fine line between war and illegal killings.

“After his service in Iraq and years of legal investigation, can he ever look his family in the eye again and be the husband, father and son they need him to be?”

Star Boyle said, “I’m thrilled to be working with Sam Miller on Robert Jones’s phenomenal script and telling Brian’s amazing story. We can explore not only the realities of war, but how they can come back to haunt you. “

Toby Jones added: “Robert has written an extraordinarily compelling, intelligent and nuanced script, and it’s a real honor to work with Danny Boy’s outstanding cast and creative team to bring it to the screen.”

And Robert Jones said, “Here’s a man who won a medal for valor, but whose hardest test was the scrutiny that followed. External control and even soul searching: Brian Wood’s story is fascinating for a writer to explore.

“It has been a great privilege to work with producers of such distinction and I am really happy that we are going into production with Sam Miller at the helm and a fantastic cast and crew.”
